“Velskoen, pronounced “fell-skoon” and known colloquially as “vellies,” are the ancestor of the modern-day desert boot. Vellies were first made in the 1600s, inspired by the footwear of the Khoikhoi tribe and crafted using raw materials. Later, our vellies were adapted by British travellers, packaged and renamed to be what we now know as desert boots.

(Brother Vellies) are made in the coastal town of Swakopmund, Namibia. There, a small group of eight Damara gentlemen assemble every shoe by hand, turning out just 20 pairs an afternoon.

…Vellies are made of vegetable-dyed Kudu leather. The Namibian government mandates the culling of these large native antelope to control their population. Kudu skin yields amazingly durable leather and suede that ages exceptionally well. I have recently been hearing about multiple instances of trans men and occasionally others condemning certain women’s spaces — spaces that include and are co-organized by trans women — as transphobic and even campaigning against them because they don’t include trans men. What the fuck, guys?

It seems like most women’s spaces are falling into two categories these days. They are either conservative anti-trans spaces that actively exclude all trans people, or they are progressive trans-positive spaces that decide that the most progressive thing they could do would be to dismantle themselves as women-only and become gender neutral. With either option, trans women are denied access to women only space. Now it appears the few women-only spaces that are actively *inclusive* of trans women are facing pressure to become gender neutral.

As a trans woman raised in feminist community, I know the value that women-only spaces can hold. Growing up in such close proximity to women-only spaces without having the same kind of access gave me a special appreciation for the power they have to create community, heal misogyny’s wounds, and further female empowerment — all things trans women are often in desperate need of.

I mean, we can all hang out in our all-genders spaces. I’ll volunteer to keep them going, my partner can bring a batch of hir awesome cupcakes. But whether we are talking about a dyke march, a women’s conference, or localized feminist organizing, exerting external force to dismantle or destroy women’s spaces is never anything but misogynistic. And taking away an important resource from trans women is the truly transphobic act in this situation.

the babies in gsa all gave us roses with our names and nice little notes on them. mine said “RORY, You are a fun and awesome person to be around. You always have a positive attitude and are accepting of everyone’s differences. Thank you for everything you have brought to our GSA! We love you!” omfg it was so sweet and after we all group hugged and ahhh i love our gsa.

i just got back from watching Milk with the gsa and others and it was really good and sometimes scary (also i hate sean penn’s guts). but it was awesome!! and we drank rootbeer floats and had caramels and got to cuddle on the couch. people were really respectful of trigger warnings so we warned of stuff before the movie and before it happened while we it was playing. hella cool!

I was talking about this with my friend last night and i know that when I grow up I want to be able to take care of people. I want to have a house where all the lovely and sad queer and trans* people can stay when they don’t have anywhere else to go. And I want to be able to cook them food or knit them sweaters or empower them when they’re feeling down. And support them and be able to have a close knit family of people to take care of (and they can take care of me too).
Can I just be an activist and take care of people and not have to have a real job
